Teeth Whitening

Your smile reflects your health and overall wellbeing — the brighter and more beautiful your smile, the more it portrays how healthy and confident you are. Most people desire a great smile to enhance their self-confidence. One procedure you can have in order to achieve this is teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a cost-effective procedure to remove stains on teeth and bring out their bright color. This procedure allows you to no longer shy away from smiling and showing your beautiful white and healthy-looking teeth.

Teeth that turn into a dull or yellowish shade are a common occurrence as people grow older. Time and the foods and drinks you consume will eventually reflect or affect the color of your teeth. Staining is especially common in drinking coffee, tea, or wine, which is why it is important to always brush your teeth right after consumption. However, it cannot always be a guaranteed solution in maintaining a white smile. At  Dr. Marty Frankel – Smiles By Design, we offer a safe and effective way to maintain a bright smile.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth Whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that gives you whiter teeth by eliminating stains from both the surface and beyond the tooth enamel. There are a variety of ways in which teeth whitening can be done depending on your needs. Teeth whitening can be done via in clinic laser treatments, bleaches, gels, or whitening kits which you can use at home. Furthermore, the cost of your treatment will depend on how extensive you wish your teeth whitening should be. So if you have deeply stained teeth that you want to turn into a pearly white shade, then you may need more treatments that would take further treatments and in turn, cost more.

Why Do I Need My Teeth Whitened?

While regularly flossing and brushing your teeth can keep them clean, it will not prevent the gradual yellow staining of your teeth. There are a number of reasons that may cause your teeth to get stained:

Teeth Stains Aren’t Visually Attractive

Caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea, or chocolate drinks can end up gradually staining your teeth. Certain types of dark pigmented foods like blueberries or red wine can linger in the tiny ridges of your teeth enamels. Over time, this can turn into yellow stains on your teeth that are common but easily fixed.

Cigarette Smoking Leaves Yellow Stains

Cigarette smoke is composed of nicotine and tar that will turn yellow on your teeth with exposure to oxygen.

Pills and Other Medications Also Causes Yellow Stains

There are some types of medication such as blood pressure pills and antidepressants that, with continuous intake, potentially cause stains on your teeth.

Over time, the enamel or white external shell of the teeth gets thinner from use and brushing. This slowly exposes the dentin, which is the yellowish and softer inner layer of the teeth.

Teeth or mouth injury caused by physical trauma can lead to more dentin, thus changing the teeth’ color into a darker shade.

Who is a Candidate for Tooth Whitening?

An ideal candidate for teeth whitening is someone who has a healthy set of teeth and gums but dislikes their yellow-stained teeth or colour.

Teeth whitening is not always recommended for everyone; it may be unsuccessful for patients below 18 years of age, pregnant or lactating, and those who suffer from worn down enamels, cavities, gum disease, exposed roots, or have had dental restorations.

If you want to know if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening, consult with Dr. Marty Frankel Dental Clinic. Set an appointment at our location.

Types of Teeth Whitening Treatments
PolaWhite Professional Whitening

Dr. Marty Frankel Dental Clinic gladly offers the PolaWhite Whitening system, a whitening procedure you can do at home. You will need an initial appointment with us to make your custom whitening trays. After a fitting appointment, you will be given a home care guide. Don’t worry, the first whitening session will be applied by one of our dental experts.

With PolaWhite, you can immediately have whiter teeth within multiple consecutive eight-minute-long sessions. You will only need a traycase and 10-14 treatments using the PolaWhite Professional Whitening Gel. It has an ingredient that desensitizes your teeth from the heat during and after the treatment. Additionally, it also has fluoride for overall comfortability. It prevents teeth dehydration since it does not make use of any form of light.

KoR Professional Whitening

To those who wish to have more extensive results, we also offer  KoR In-Office Professional Monitored Whitening. It will first require making the KoR Professional Whitening High Precision Custom Trays, which uses KoR High Potency Refrigerated Tri-Barrel Activated Whitening Gel.

Dr. Frankel will administer the first application to ensure that the high-precision custom trays are tightly sealed to prevent leakage and have the most whitening effect on your teeth. KoR is highly regarded worldwide for being the most effective whitening system. It does not need lights or lasers, unlike other whitening treatments. It instead makes use of high-potency gels and an intricately made application protocol that consistently brings outstanding results. So long as its materials are refrigerated, the KoR system can provide maximum whitening that whitens even the most stubborn stains such as tetracycline and fluorosis, all without chemical stabilizers.

Teeth Whitening Aftercare: How to Maintain Them

You will be given custom-fitting trays to maintain the results of your first whitening application. Make sure to follow your dentist’s guidelines on when and how to use the given touch-up kit. Make sure to practice oral hygiene diligently and to visit your dentist for your teeth cleanings. We recommend using toothpaste with whitening agents to prevent your teeth from restaining.

Frequently Asked Questions

When soft tissues or gums are irritated by the teeth whitening gel, it is considered a chemical burn that’s akin to a sunburn. This causes the area to become slightly sore and to turn white, but will flake off gradually as the results are temporary, they will return to normal in 24 to 48 hours.

After the first 24 hours, the final results of tooth whitening are usually observed. If at-home whitening kits were used, it might take a much longer time to see the results. Since there is a lower concentration of whitening agents, at home kits may take two to three weeks before achieving any desired results.

After teeth whitening, any food or drink that may stain a white shirt shouldn’t be consumed for 48 hours. If you wish to drink coffee, soda, or any dark-colored drinks, make sure to use a straw instead of sipping directly from the container.

Yes, you may. However, teeth whitening treatment should be done as fast and consistently as possible to achieve the best results without a prolonged delay. If a treatment day is skipped, that missed treatment day would need to be added to make up for the necessary number of  treatments.

After applying the whitening, brushing your teeth must be done gently to avoid gum irritation. However, it is better to brush your teeth first before applying whitening to avoid having plaque stuck under the whitening strips or trays.

If you are noticing yellowish teeth, it may be due to the thinning of enamel, thus exposing the dentin. This effect is normal as your teeth become more yellow as you age. After whitening, if some of your teeth turn white while some parts are yellow, it may be caused by having a thin tooth enamel.

As people grow older, it’s normal for their teeth to become more yellow. Home remedies are used by a lot of people to reduce this. Age or specific teeth enamel may often restrict getting super white teeth.

Yes you could drink coffee but it is suggested that patients avoid coffee for at least 48 hours or even two weeks as that is the safest recovery period since many people recover at a different rate. It is advised that patients use straws for all their beverages for at least a week to lessen direct contact with the tooth enamel.

Food that may cause teeth irritation or re-staining must be avoided. Usually, you may return to your regular diet after 48 to 72 hours.

If minerals are lost in the tooth’s enamel layer, it will result in white patches forming on the surface of your teeth. This effect is especially noticed by patients who have completed an at-home teeth whitening treatment.
